Admitted Student Summer Email Series COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog This week the Office of Student Affairs at SIPA started to send a series of emails to admitted students who have paid an enrollment deposit for fall 2009.   The emails contain important information pertaining to enrollment and preparation for classes in the fall. Throughout the history of the world, the position, rights and treatment of women has always been one of the ‘’unimportant’’ issues and has been not given the attention needed by others all over the world. Even though there has been progress made today, many women still feel oppressed even in the most developed countries. This oppression derives from the lack of education, religious affiliation and the typical stereotypes, which portray men as the ones in charge and women as the weak part of the chain of our societies. One movement that would help women fight against these stereotypes and leave their own mark on their importance in today’s societies was feminism. Feminism was a stimulant for a lot of women who came together to bring changes in the way they are perceived, there were not alone they were together eager to gain same treatment as men in the workplace, education, politics and in everyday life. However, despite their efforts, even today there are still inequalities between the two genders. To begin with, lets see what is feminism. Since its appearance, the notion of feminism stimulates questions about what is the precise meaning of this concept. Introduction This report evaluates my own experience working within a team to organise a fundraising event at the South and City College Enterprise Day. We were aimed to raise money for Teenager Cancer Trust by selling handmade crafts. Below, I am going to reflect about my own experience and about how the team worked together to achieve our goals. Team roles and problem solving techniques will be evaluated and suggestions for improvement will be given as we have now learned from this experience. 1. Team roles Everyone in the team adopted different roles according to their skills and personalities. The roles we played were not agreed by them team but just came according to each one s abilities. The team had functional diversity, that is, different skills that put together allowed the team to achieve its goals (West, 2012). This also provided the team with different ideas to share and achieve the best outcomes (Sohmen, 2013). One member of the team was a resource investigator (Belbin, 1991-2006). She creates contacts during the fair and explored new selling opportunities, engaging people to come to the table. Throughout the entire paper, I'll be explaining why breastfeeding should be welcomed at every public place and using very substantial evidence to convince you or further your appreciation for such a natural occurrence . Women who breastfeed now a days in public settings always have to cover up their breasts and that's not always good because they might not have a lot of time throughout the day to breastfeed . These women are completely embarrassed to feed their child just because they are told it is wrong and that it ' s i m proper . In some cultures this may be true but even so it is their right. Their right to feel free and to give their child the natural nutrients that they deserve. In one of my sources Breastfeeding Mom Shamed At Boy Scouts Meeting For Causing Disruption' , a wom a n named Jas mi n Miller was stopped by another wom a n for breas tfeeding her one -year- old in front of little boys trying to do scouts. After being told that she couldn't breastfeed, she was left babbled by the whole thing . "I am a childhood sexual abuse survivor, so overcoming distorted views of the body and body-sham ing has been difficult throughout life, including childbirth and nursing ," ( Pittman). As you can see her situation was more than just the obvious display of public breas t feeding but it was a story of hardships especially those dealt with her other children with nursing problems. After the incident with the boy scout meeting, Jasmin as it says in the article "reached out to the Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts of America." ( Pittman ). After the company had received her news they had sent Jasmin a letter explaining how sorry they are for what happ e ned but there wasn't any truth to their letter when they started twisting their ap ology from "hey I'm sorry" to "you are not allowed to breastfeed in public", so according to Vance Lackey one of the people from the company says and I quote "wrote to Millar asking her to find find a compromise'"(Pittman). He basically told Jasmin to give up her right to breas t feed because it make s a few people uncomfortable . Eventually , the company wrote back to her again with a proper apology letter this time from the executive name Larry brown and she got full support from them . Political Party Ads - Who Pays for Them Finding out who pays for political party ads in election season can be tricky. Candidates and committees who purchase political party ads on television and in print are required to disclose their identities. But often times those committees have vague names such as Americans for Prosperity or Americans for a Better Future. Understanding who contributes money to those committees so they can buy political ads is an important function of democracy because the ads play such a large role in elections. Are they conservative or liberal in political philosophy? Do they have a special interest or issue they are trying to influence? It is sometimes difficult to discern what a committees motives are just by watching or reading political ads. Who Pays for Political Party Ads Generally speaking, there are several types of groups that pay for political advertising. They are individual candidate election campaigns such as those for President Barack Obama or 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney; political parties such as the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee; and political action committees or super PACs funded by industries and special interests. Some of the largest special interests in American politics are abortion and gun-control opponents, energy companies and senior citizens. In recent years, though, super PACs have emerged has powerhouses in the electoral process. So have 527 groups and other organizations who seek to exploit weak disclosure laws and spend so-called dark money. How to Tell Who Pays for Political Ads It is easy to tell when an individual political candidate or political party buys airtime for ads. They will disclose their identities, often at the end of the ad. Typically, the wording is This ad was paid for by the committee to re-elect Barack Obama or I am Mitt Romney and I approved this message. Political action committees and super PACs are required to do the same, but they are not required to provide a list of major contributors or identify their special interests on the air. Such information is available only through the committees own websites or through Federal Election Commission records. Those records, called campaign finance reports, include details about how much a political candidate or political party is spending on political ads. Disclosure Controversy Political action committees and super PACs are required by law to list their contributors in disclosures filed regularly in Washington, D.C. Such information can shed light on whether those super PACs are conservative or liberal in nature. But some super PACs exploit a loophole in reporting laws not addressed in the legal case that led to their creation, Citizens United v. the FEC. Super PACs are permitted to accept contributions from nonprofit groups classified as 501[c][4] or social welfare organizations under the Internal Revenue Service tax code. The problem is that under that tax code, 501[c][4] groups are not required to disclose their own contributors. That means they can make contributions to super PACs in the name of the social welfare entity without having to disclose where they themselves got the money. Attempts to close that loophole in Congress have failed. Greater Transparency The Federal Communications Commission requires television stations that get paid to broadcast political ads to keep a record of who bought airtime. Those records are required to be made available for inspection to the public at the stations. The contracts show the which candidates, political committees or special interests are buying political ads, the length and target audience, how much they paid, and when the ads aired. Beginning in August 2012, the FCC also required television stations to post online all contracts with candidates, super PACs and other committees buying airtime for political ads.
